Earthquake: Liestal BL (severity 1/5).

What hazard threatens

Tremors can damage buildings; aftershocks, power/water outages and blocked routes are possible.

Context & protective measures

Background: Switzerland has a moderate but real earthquake hazard — highest in Valais, the Basel region and Graubünden. Most damage is caused not by the quake itself but by falling objects, broken glass and, more rarely, collapsing building elements. Aftershocks can put further strain on an already weakened structure.

Recommendation

Likelihood very low, impact very low. Prepare using the linked guide.

Protective steps: during shaking, "Drop – Cover – Hold On": kneel under a sturdy table, protect head and neck, hold on until the shaking stops. Do not run outside, avoid lifts. After the quake, check gas, electricity and water; if you smell gas, do not switch anything and ventilate. Keep an emergency kit, drinking water and a battery-powered radio ready to follow official warnings.
