Dependants

Think of everyone who is cared for too: children, pets and people with special needs. We calculate baby food, nappies and pet food for 30 days like the rest of the supply – deliberately going further than the federal 1-week minimum; aids and arrangements come on top.

Children & baby

Children & baby
Item Amount Note
Baby food & nappies 30 days our recommendation: calculate for 30 days – the quantity from your own daily use; powdered formula is not sterile: boil the water if in doubt
Familiar activities & toys — —
Children's medication — fever and pain remedies in children's dosages – no aspirin/ASA for children; clarify the choice with your doctor or pharmacy («Health» checklist)
Change of clothes in different sizes — —

Pets

Pets
Item Amount Note
Pet food 30 days our recommendation: calculate for 30 days – the daily ration times 30, rotate continuously; include drinking water for the animal
Water & bowl — —
Medication & vaccination record — incl. the pet passport; keep the chip registration up to date (dogs: AMICUS – compulsory, cats: ANIS – voluntary); note down the vet's emergency number
Carrier & leash — never leave animals shut in when evacuating (FOCP); label the carrier with your contact details; clarify in advance where the animal can come along

Special needs

Special needs
Item Amount Note
Talk to neighbours & people who need assistance — FOCP: talk about needs in advance, help in an evacuation, organise support – contacts go into the family emergency plan (the «Information & radio» checklist)
Visual aids & hearing aid batteries — —
Mobility & care aids — walking aids, incontinence and care supplies, skin protection, disinfection – plan for everything that is needed daily (a supply like the rest of the emergency supplies)
Reserve medication for people in your care — FOCP: long-term medication «always keep a supply or even carry it on you» – clarify the reserve and the quantity with your doctor or pharmacy («Health» checklist)
Power-dependent devices: plan with your doctor & electricity supplier — home ventilation, oxygen and the like: clarify a solution in advance with the specialist, possibly the electricity supplier and the municipality; keep batteries charged – see the «Energy & light» checklist
Emergency card for carers — free from Alzheimer Switzerland: a card in your wallet shows that you are caring for someone and names the stand-in
Personal alarm button or alarm watch for people living alone — handy in everyday life – but not reliable in a power or network outage: the arrangement with the neighbours remains the backup; advice from Pro Senectute
